"Models of Ensemble and Confederacy"

GABRIELE SCHAFER: Como actriz, ha estado en escena en Nueva York y otros lugares dentro y fuera de Estados Unidos, como por ejemplo su Alemania natal, así como en numerosas películas independientes.  Es co-directora artística desde 1981 del “Thieves Theatre”, que ha producido trabajos en Chicago, Toronto, Nueva York, Seattle, Los Ángeles, Toronto y Wellington, Nueva Zelanda y es co-fundadora de RAT Conference.  Ha traducido a autores del alemán, incluyendo Heiner Mueller y Rainer Werner Fassbinder.  Graduada en actuación en la Yale School of Drama, vive en Brooklyn con su marido y socio creativo Nick Fracaro.

Workshop
Translation or Transference?
The function of language in storytelling across cultures

An investigation of the understanding provided or prevented by language issues through the exploration of three different translations. Actors will present a scene from a contemporary German play a) in the original German, b) in an English translation c) in a Spanish translation of the English. Artists and audience participants will use this event to interrogate the following issues: How does language dictate our perceptions of story telling? What happens to the original story when it is transferred to another language, i.e. what beyond words is lost or found in translation? What cultural associations or projections exist as a part of the viewing experience when language is understood and when it is not? Does the kinesthetic experience of speaking or hearing the language provide keys to cultural understanding? One group of actors, all with differing mother tongues, will serve as the primary demonstrators, although audience members are encouraged to actively participate throughout the investigative process.

MELANIE DREYER se graduó en la "Northwestern University" en Chicago con una maestría en Dirección, donde trabajó con Maria Zimmerman, Frank Galati, Tina Landau y Bob Falls. Fue Co-Directora artística del "ShatterMask Theater", un teatro de la equidad aclamado por la crítica. Se especializa en la investigación de alternativas a los modos tradicionales de la producción. Con un fluido manejo del idioma alemán, se especializa en la traducción y la dirección de obras alemanas contemporáneos. Está trabajando actualmente en producciones bilingües (alemanas e inglesas) para presentar en los E.E.U.U. y Alemania.

"Writing and Rehearsal"

Writing as performance, playwriting in the rehearsal process. Exercises and discussion - writing into and out of movement and other improvisations; exploring "Butoh-fu", the process of Hijikata's choreograohy. An examination of the new position of the script after Grotowski.

NICK FRACARO ha sido director artístico de "Thieves Theatre", Grupo de Teatro internacionalmente activo desde 1981. Entre las producciones de "Thieves Theatre": "Deathwatch" en la Penitenciaría Estatal de Illinois, "Marat/Sade" conjuntamente con el grupo antipsiquiátrico de pacientes externos "Own Our Own" en el Centro Teatral de Toronto, el estreno mundial de la polémica obra de Rainer Werner Fassbinder "La Basura, la ciudad y la muerte" en Nueva York, junto con numerosos eventos para-teatrales, como el "Museo Viviente del Mónada Nomade", un proyecto de tres años en los suburbios pobres de Manhattan. En 1994, Fracaro co-fundó la Rat Conference (www.ratconference.com), una alianza de teatros y trabajadores del teatro que intentan compartir recursos, trabajo y formas de trabajo. Continúa trabajando como "Central de Comunicaciones" de RAT.

"Viewpoints"

Originated by Mary Overlie, a post-modern dance choreographer, The Viepoints is a system of improvisation that investigates space and time in performance. Director Anne Bogart further refined this system and applied it to ensemble work in the theatre. Breaking the experience of the performer down into six main categories, The Viewpoints builds deep ensemble awareness, develops intuition, increases attention to detail, strength and flexibility --- all the while fostering an exuberant, and truly collaborative work environment for performers, choreographers, and directors alike.

CYNTHIA CROOT es una directora y dramaturga que explora las formas de poner sus habilidades artísticas para trabajar por causas humanitarias. Graduada en Dirección en la Universidad de Columbia, sus créditos en Nueva York incluyen su trabajo en el "Museo de Guggenheim", la Alcaldía de Nueva York, y el "Joseph Papp Public Theatre". Los créditos nacionales e internacionales incluyen producciones radiales y teatrales Baltimore, MD, Chicago, IL, Juneau, AK, Johannesburg, Sudáfrica, y Klagenfurt, Austria. Ha sido artista invitada en la Univ. de Columbia, la "East Harlem School", la Univ. de Bucknell y la Univ. de Nueva York, y ha enseñado "Viewpoints" en varias instituciones, incluyendo "Bryn Mawr College" y "Washington Collegue". Establecida en Nueva York, es consultora en el "Centro para la Resolución Internacional de Conflictos", miembro del "Kazbah Project", y directora artística del grupo de teatro "Tinderbox".

Workshop
"The Macbeth Project"

RAT has given itself the task of co-creating and rehearsing a version of Macbeth over the next five years, with new material contributed and considered in some way at our meets over that period. Experimenta and Rat participants are encouraged to bring a 10-minute response to, meditation on or new interpretation of the themes of Macbeth -- a poem, a gesture, a soundscape, a renunciation of the premise, an antidote… We'll compare notes, talk through points of connection and opposition, then work with methods of bringing the material together and the project forward. Whatever the project does for Shakespeare's play, dramaturging Macbeth will dramaturg us..

JACOB ZIMMER es un artista de teatro que vive en Halifax, Canadá. Como director artístico de la compañía "Small Wooden Shoe", Jacob ha creado y dirigido numerosos proyectos. Es miembro fundador del "Sabotage Group" adonde dirige. Otros créditos de dirección incluyen a "The Directors Gym" (Toronto), la "Escuela de Arte Contemporáneo" (Vancouver) y "Vancouver Pro Musica". Jacob ha dado talleres con "Small Wooden Shoe", el "North End Dance Co-op", el "King's College" y el "Festival de Drama de Nueva Escocia". Jacob es miembro de "Directores Literarios y Dramaturgos de las Américas" (LMDA), Editor de la sección "Work in Progress" de la Revista "LMDA Review" y es miembro de la Junta de Directores del centro del "Khyber Centre for the Arts". Estudió también en la "Escuela para las Artes Contemporáneas" de la "Simon Fraser University".
